I was recently approached by a client looking to launch a small merchandising business. The brief required a custom illustration of a unique character that would serve as the company’s mascot. The client had a rough image they liked but hoped to get something more professional and unique and produced as a high-resolution vector art piece that could be transferred to various media, including shirts.
The client had very specific requirements. They wanted to maintain most elements of the original clipart design. The final illustration had to be a male skeleton wearing cut-off jeans and combat boots, with an American flag draped over his shoulder, one hand making a fist down by his side and the other across his heart in a pledge of allegiance stance. For the face, this is the part he most wanted to elevate. He wanted something that felt aesthetically pleasing, drawn in an anime style — far less ghoulish than the original design.
I worked up a rough mockup of the new design, which the client loved. Unfortunately, he did not have the budget to complete the project at the time, so it was placed on hold. I do hope I get to return to this in the future. The client has other similar designs, and he will need help illustrating them to create a strong and recognizable brand.
Note: This is a work in progress and does not reflect the final art deliverables. It is, however, representative of the type of work I can do, and I’m always excited about a new illustrative challenge.
